Bread Oven

March 1, 2011 by stowe farm

For centuries villages have come together to bake bread and other staples in their earthen ovens.  When they were fired up, anyone in town could take a turn to bake and cook meals that would provide food for weeks. Such a simple technology brought communities together for nourishment, companionship, and celebrations.
Katywil Farm Community offered a workshop to build such an oven. There was so much interest to learn this beautiful but simple craft, that we built another one down the road on the Topitzer’s farm. Maria can’t wait to start baking bread. Ashley Schenk led both of the oven builds. He led earthen oven workshops at Yestermorrow Design Build School .
