Peters super energy efficient house at Katywil Farm CommunityThe latest cutting edge energy efficient house at Katywil has just received it’s Certificate of Occupancy and the new home owners are in the process of moving in. This house incorporates all the typical features of contemporary efficient houses and was designed to reach Net-Zero status. It has a walk-out basement with a radiant floor slab, it incorporates the usual features of passive solar design as well as adding a 7 kW photovoltaic array.

That PV array powers an air to water heat-pump which heats both the space and the domestic hot water system. The house was planned to be super insulated as well as
built super tight.

The final HERS rating isn’t in yet but the blower door test resulted in
less than one Air Change per Hour ( .85 ACH50). The house includes a small wood
stove for back-up heating. All electric appliances exceed the Energy Star ratings.

Besides all these efficient features this is a traditionally designed house with shed
dormers and a single car garage extension. The basement level includes a root cellar.
An effort was made to use green and efficient materials like the bamboo floors and
cellulose insulation. The metal roof is literally green, long lasting and reflects unwanted
heat. Ceiling fans help to cool the house during hot spells.

This house was designed by the owner, Architect Peter Brooks and built by Karsten
Construction. The next house built at Katywil is by the same team and should be even
more efficient.
