As the peaked winter light of January yielded to the growing strength of mid-February’s sunshine, the winter greens in our greenhouse awaken also, visibly perking up as the days lengthen – just like us!
Even deep winter days can be pretty comfortable in the Stowe Farm Community greenhouse – a nice place to gather for tea and reading poetry!
On sunny February days it is a tonic to visit the greenhouse and strip down to teeshirts in the delightful warmth. Digging our hands into the earth is so therapeutic when the snow still blankets our hills. We sow spinach, swiss chard, kale and other hardy greens in flats to plant in the greenhouse beds in March, where they will join their brethren who made it through the winter’s deep freeze.
The community will enjoy our hardy greens throughout mud season until we replace our winter friends with more delicate summer delights like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants in May…
