Haynes is always trying to outsmart pigs, this time with some success. The challenge was to provide a continuous source of water, on gravity pressure, that is relatively impervious to pig fascination and abuse. Pigs are strong and curious; they like to rub up against anything new or just anything that has edges. Their curiosity often leads them to get their snouts underneath a new object and try to flip it up, sometimes bending or breaking it.
So, Haynes devised a gravity fed system using two 50-gallon food grade barrels on a pedestal. One of the blue barrels is attached to the waterer by a hose. The waterer itself is a small float driven trough (purchased from your local farmer’s supply) affixed to the pig’s moveable house.
It is hinged on the bottom so that it can be dumped and washed out. Most importantly It has a sturdy piece of wood protecting the underside, which is rounded, so there are no tempting edges and it deters pushing up from underneath. So far it is standing up to the test of all the thirsty pigs!
