The portable bandsaw sawmill is owned and operated by our neighbor, Matt Gancz. It was built by a Menonite craftsman in the Midwest. Matt met him in the Amish area of eastern Pennsylvania to take delivery of the machine.
This timber for a post and beam shed is from our managed woodlot and from the border of our neighbor, Lynn.
It easily handled all the logs we could feed it. The bandsaw is powered by a simple Honda engine. All of the other functions are powered by Matt. No fancy hydraulics. Just push and pull and crank.
In addition to working as a physics teacher and milling for others, Matt will soon own his own woodlot in southern Vermont where he’ll mill his own trees into lumber for his own house.
The oak, ash, pine and hemlock framing lumber is destined for an 11×18 post and beam shed. Those pieces include the 4×6’s and 6×6’s in lengths of 10 and 12 feet, plus 1 inch thick planks for sheathing. The cherry will become the cabinet that Elizabeth started hinting about years ago!
